Obituary of James Eldon Young

Brewer--James E. "Hoofer" Young, 94, husband of the late Eleanor (Arey) Young, died Aug. 21, 2016 in Brewer. He was born July 25, 1922 in Bangor, the son of Henry Otis and Anna Josephine Young. Hoofer, as he was known, attended schools in Bangor and was a graduate of John Bapst High School in 1941. He was the Maine State Golden Gloves Light Weight Champion in 1941 and served with the US Army during WWII in the South Pacific as a gunner. Hoofer worked as a brakeman and conductor for 35 years for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed everything from "berrying" to hunting, fishing and trapping. He seldom missed a day at the Bangor Racetrack when the horses were in town and enjoyed travelling to various fairs around the state. Most of all, he was a loving, devoted family man. Surviving are five children, Donna Young of Lawrence, MA, James Young, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Orrington, Anna "Jody" Anderson and her husband, Oren of Dedham, Connie Breau and her husband, Frank of Brewer and Thomas Young of Powder Springs, Georgia; 22 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; a special niece, Susan McCurdy of Brewer and nephew, Robbie Milliken of Holden. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant brother, Thomas, a brother, Charlie and a son, Charles "Chuck" Young. Hoofer's family gratefully thanks the staff of Beacon Hospice and Brewer Nursing & Rehab. Center for their excellent care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Friday, August, 26, 2016 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Teresa's Catholic Church, South Main St., Brewer. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor and a time of friendship and refreshments will be afterward at St. Teresa's Parish Center.
