Obituary of Edmund J. Moreshead, Sr.
Bangor--Edmund J. Moreshead Sr., 86, died November 11, 2015, at a Bangor Healthcare facility after a brief illness. He was born December 18, 1928, in Gardiner, to George R. and Jennie (Ladner) Moreshead. Edmund was the oldest of six children.
He graduated from Gardiner High School, Class of 1946, and enlisted in the Army. He spent 18 months in Korea, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Edmund graduated from the University of Maine in 1953 with a Bachelors Degree in Forestry. He began working in road construction in 1954 as a surveyor for the Lewiston to Augusta extension of the Maine Turnpike. He spent a year working in the Buffalo area on the New York Thruway and then a year in New York City working on high rises. Moving back to Maine, he began his career with the Maine Department of Transportation, first as a survey crew chief on Interstate projects between Bangor and Houlton, eventually becoming a resident engineer on highway projects. He retired in 1985. He married Louise (Nawfel) in 1961 and they were married for 51 years, until her passing in 2012.
Edmund was predeceased by his wife, parents, brother-in-law Ken Wiley, and sister Alma (Boots) Weston. He is survived by son, Edmund Jr. and wife, Suzanne, of Carmel; granddaughters Sara and Molly Moreshead of Holden; sisters Ida Wiley of Harpswell, Winona Smith and husband Myron of Litchfield, Gail McDougal and husband Terry of Brunswick; brother Herbert Moreshead and wife Linda of West Gardiner; several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Hope Hospice, P.O. Box 70, Eddington, ME 04428.
