It is so hard to lose such a kind, thoughtful, accomplished person from your life. There will be a hole in our hearts for a long time to come. Darrell was one of the greatest people I have ever known. He seemed to channel the adversity he faced in his life, not into bitterness, but into accomplishing outsized physical feats and into his considerate, compassionate treatment of others. He was a beloved teacher and colleague. He was a tireless advocate for school employees. I could write several books about our encounters with administrators as BEA reps and our adventures attending MEA and NEA events both in state and out. His hiking exploits are legendary. But Darrell's proudest achievement was his family. He told many times how proud he was of the adults his children had become. He was also a doting grandfather. Chelsea wrote her college essay on her grandfather. Particularly memorable was her description of Thanksgiving at Darrell's house: "there was a whole table of delicious food that he had made himself." I had hoped for Darrell to ride off on his motorcycle with Shirley into a long, healthy, happy retirement. Sadly, that was not to be. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy to all of you.

Dear Kristi, Darrell Jr., Shirley, and families,
So very saddened by the news of Darrell's passing. I have known Darrell since the 60's when we attended Brewer High School together and count him as a treasured friend. And my daughter years later had him as a science teacher. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this sad time. He was a very kind and loving man and such a gentle natured soul. He will be greatly missed.

I am so very sorry for your loss. It was a privilege to be a student of Mr. King (class of ‘89). I will always remember his warmth and compassion, and his clear love of teaching and science.
