I want to send my condolences at this difficult time to Mel's daughters and family. I was a basketball player back in 1975 when then Coach Coffin lead the Gardiner High School Girl's Basketball Team to the very first Class A State Title. As I reflect on his passing, I want you to know that he had a huge impact on me and many young women athletes. He was a champion in shaping girls athletics in the Gardiner area around the time of the passage of Title 9 that increased athletic opportunities for girls. He taught me that hard work, practice, and a belief in being good enough was a winning combination. These early formed habits set the stage and have contributed to successes in my life. So Thank You Coach. Rest in Peace. God Bless- Crystal (Pazdziorko) Proulx

My sincerest condolences to the family. Mr. Coffin was a wonderful teacher and coach. He had a friendly, positive way that would draw you in to want to perform at a high level. His impact on Gardiner High School Girls Basketball was obvious as he won one State Championship, and his teams made many trips to the tournaments, including two to the Class A Eastern Maine finals. We had a lot of fun and played in some wild games! I look back on those memories with great fondness and appreciation. May you now rest peacefully, Mr. Coffin.

So many people will miss Mel. I am sorry for your loss. I first met Mel when my husband worked with him in the GAHS Science department in the 80's, and we enjoyed some outdoor fun when school was out. Then I had the pleasure of working with Mel myself at Gardiner in the 90's. He cared a lot about the kids. He combined being serious about teaching science with a positive attitude and glimpses of his playful side. Mel was a solid colleague and friend during some rocky years. Glad to hear he had grandkids and lots of family time after retirement. May he rest in peace.

He was my favorite coach. He coached track and field until my senior year and I was very upset that he left. He was the one that found out I could run as well as throw no matter what my size was. He was also my boss at Gardiner Recreation. My prayers go out to his family because he was such a great man RIP coach Coffin.

I’m so sorry to hear of Coach Coffin’s passing. He was my first Phys Ed teacher (always Mr. Coffin) and my high school basketball coach. I will always think of his smile and his yell. The more he yelled, the more you knew how much he cared. We had some great moments at the Bangor Auditorium and he taught us all so much. Condolences to the family and those who loved him. He will be missed.

To Janice and family,
So sorry to hear of Mel's passing. Wish I had stayed more in touch, but have lived out of the state of Maine since I was 20. Living in SW Florida now and Cousin Bump lives down the street. That has been a hoot! I do stay in touch with Aunt Phyllis. The next time I am in the area I promise to call. Cousin Bump told me of Mel's teaching career and said he was a great educator. Please give my regards to Lynn and all of the family.
With Fond Affection, Dolores (Pooler)Bagish

In the early days of Mellie becoming part of our family, he invited us out for supper at his camp on Harriman Pond. I don't remember the meal specifically, but I remember the dessert. He had bought a pecan pie from Sam's, which was his favorite. When it was time to serve it, he put it in the middle of the table, gave us a wink and a fork. Then he put his in the middle of the pie and took a bite. We followed suit! One of the best pie eating experiences I've ever had! Since that day, I made him a pecan pie for his birthday and Christmas every year. As a long time favorite in our family as well, I can guarantee we will think of Mellie every time we have it from now on. Something else Mel and I shared was a great interest in Stephen King. We talked of most of his books, and went to see the second release of "It" together.
Thanks for a trove of memories, Mel. You were loved, and will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear about Mel’s passing. He was an important person to so many young lives, including mine. He thought I was a good basketball player, and was very kind when I decided not to play. A wonderful man! Please accept my sincere sympathies!

Mel was an exceptional guy and my closer cousin. Mel will be catching up with his other cousin Jim Pooler who passed back in April. He's certainly been through a lot, yet continued to move along like all was well. Going to miss Mel. Best to family and friends.

Mellie was my favorite babysitter back in Brewer and 33 yrs later he again became my neighbor just as I was starting my family. He was a wonderful de facto grandfather providing constant laughter and excitement for Tia and Jenee'. Mellie was always a teacher, never missing an opportunity to instruct the young and young at heart. He loved encouraging crazy acts of courage when the girls lacked the self confidence, from diving off the dock, riding bikes to climbing ladders onto the roof, and occasionally more acceptable things (from mom's perspective) like science, math and more recently politics, no matter the subject, he had the heart of a teacher. We could count on Mellie to keep the event of the day memorable. Our hearts go out to all of Mellie's family and friends. Respectfully the Tardy's , Don, Debbie, Tiara and Jenee'

Don't grieve for me for now I'm free
I'm following the path God has laid you see
I took His hand when I heard His call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To laugh to love
to work or play
Tasks left undone must stay that way
I found the peace at the close of day
If my parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joys
A friendship shared
a laugh a kiss yes
these things
I too will miss
Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
My life's been full I savored much
Good friends good times a loved one's touch
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts and peace to thee
God wanted me now
He set me free
