Janie, my sadness for your loss and all you have handled in your devoted effort for recovery is deep and felt often when the thoughts of you and Russ creep in, many thoughts, many aspects of your life together, and the "who you are" of each of you.
Courage speaks of both and I'm sure you both gathered it up in abundance, especially for this trial time. Kindness to others was always there at every turn when the opportunity of sharing it presented itself. Russ is in the place in my heart that noticeably "ticked" so often because of his immediate acceptance of me, always validating the"other" in giving them an important place with him--an integral part of his music shared in joy and a wonderful spirit of giving. The world has lost a very special someone
Writing this leaves me saddened again. I pray the difficult days of your loss will lead to peace over time, that the pain will ease and lessen as the memories of your life together will help bring peace to your soul.
With deepest sympathy and caring about you,
Carol
Where do I like to sing? Everywhere! Sometimes when the day is at dawn or dusk, still and quiet, the beauty of the earth overwhelming me with gratitude, I sing my prayers of thanks and praise to Him. I create the tune and lyrics spontaneously, different every day. My foster mother told me that when I was five years old, I stood atop the grain box in our farm-home and sang for an hour, non-stop; I never told her that I remembered that experience. One remembers the highs in life. I grew up in Searsport with the ocean bordering on three sides of my homestead; I sang throughout my life strolling along the shore there.
I am now 79 and I sing with music that I or others create and I dance with it at various times, my own choreography varied with the rhythms and moods created. I am so happy inside at the dancing times, I smile constantly, prolifically! Sometimes I greet others sitting along the waterfront with song--"Walking in the sunshine, sing a little sunshine song...." and others depending on the day, audience, and emotions.
I sing in my car. I sing at church. I sing in my garden. I sing as I work in my house. I sing to babies and young children. I sang "You are my Sunshine" to a group of ladies knitting, I think, quite a few in number, and changed the lyrics thus: "You'll never know, dear ladies, how much I admire you..." I sing to restore my soul, to express love and caring, just as Russ did, to make happpiness, to have fun, and to be like the birds--they sing and soar, I sing and soar. Russ did that, we know! Way beyond!

Russ and I went to Bgr HS , Cl '66, forming a loose and easy friendship. We went to different colleges. After graduation I found that the documentary film job I had lined up had disappeared due to lack of State funding. I met up with Russ, who was searching for a position, too. We joined forces and visited all 14 TV stations, me looking for a job behind the camera, him in front of it. He got a job, I did not. It still makes me smile! The rest is history, and a good one.

Russ and I recorded Talking Books for around 6 years, and it was always a highlight of my week when I knew I'd see him. During the breaks we'd talk music, photography and whatever else He had a great sense of humor and a calm and kind demeanor. My thoughts go out to Jane. Russ touched many lives in a positive way, mine included. This is a loss for all of us.

Russ was a wonderful barbershop friend and a mentor to me, for all things barbershop since meeting him so many years ago. I loved his great sense of humor, sparkling eyes and great smile. He so loved to sing and was just a great cheerleader for this hobby of ours that is a way of life for so many of us. He lived it, breathed it and shared it with all of us in ways we will never forget nor ever forget him. I look forward someday to singing with him in that great barbershop chorus in the sky when once again we will sing, keep the Whole World Singing.....my heart breaks Russ that you are gone - just know how much you were loved by your barbershop buddies and I.

Russ was truly a man for all seasons. I first met him in the 70's when he came to Waterville to encourage the fledgling barbershop chorus, the Kennebec Valley Chordmen. For all of his singing life, he belonged to the national organization known as "the Society for the Encouragement and Preservation of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America." His humor was as pervasive as his love of singing. He once confided in me that the acronym SPEBQSA really translated into the saying, "Some People Expect That Basses Should Quit Singing Altogether."
in the ensuing years I would eagerly await the Mainely Maine Chorus' yearly concert because its professional toe-tapping performance would leave me on a high for weeks afterward, I also enjoyed the opportunity to once again touch base with Russ. Several years ago, his quartet was a featured group at the Blue Hill Pops on a blistering hot July night in the George Stevens Academy gymnasium. It was the first year that the Pops had rented air conditioning for the event, a change that sat well with everyone that night, including the performers. That was the last time I saw and heard Russ perform.
As I read of Russ' passing in the paper this morning, a favorite barbershop tune ran rampant through my head, "Keep America singing, all day, all day long, Watch good will come a winging, on a song, Smile the while you are singing, Carry, carry your part. Keep a melody ringing and ringing in your heart" Certainly that was Russ's mantra.Thank you, Russ, for all the joy your brought us.

Dear Jane,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I remember driving home from Orono H.S. and you would stop by the TV station. Russ always greeted you with the most delightful smile - such a gift! My heart is with you.
Sincerely,
