Obituary of Sophie H. Wood
Sophie H. Wood, 101, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough after a short illness. She was born in Bangor, the daughter of the late Joseph and Pauline (Ostafichuk) Shaboski.
Sophie was a graduate of John Bapst Catholic High School. She was employed by the Maine State Employment Office in Augusta for 2 years then transferred to the Bangor office where she worked for 5 years. She left to marry Vincent M. Wood. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary being involved in many projects. She was elected Vice President and President for a term of two years in each office. She was a member of the Cemetery Angels, St. Mary’s Sodality and a member of the Saturday Nighter’s for 25 years where every month, Sophie and Vincent went for dinner and dancing. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church. She enjoyed working around the house with Vincent in their vegetable and flower garden. Sophie and Vincent loved to travel to DC every year to visit her sister Mary and husband until their passing. Sophie enjoyed people, had a smile and kind word for everyone. She was the life of every party. Coming from a large family, she enjoyed family gatherings, many of them which she hosted. Watching all her nieces and nephews grow up brought her great pleasure and called them “her kids”.
Sophie is predeceased by her parents, beloved husband Vincent M. Wood, five brothers Raymond, Edward, Stanley, Francis and James; 2 sisters Amelia M. Shaboski (who Sophie was a caregiver for three years), Mary Shaboski Popko and a very close niece, Jane Pyzynski Finch. She will be sadly missed by special nieces Christina M. Reed of Scarborough and Barbara A. Heflin and husband James Heflin. She is also survived by many other loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
