Maxine Marie (Smith) Jernigan
“Mammie”
Winterport - Maxine Marie (Smith) Jernigan, wife of the late Melvin Jernigan, passed away at her home in Winterport surrounded by her family January 7, 2016. She was born May 23, 1927 in Brooks Maine, the daughter of William P. Smith and V. Edna (Woodman) Smith.
Maxine was a graduate of Winterport High School in 1944. She attended College at The Maine School of Commerce in Bangor now known as Husson University. Maxine worked as a bookkeeper and Auditor for W.T. Grants Department Store, Sears Department Store, and National Confectionary in Bangor. Maxine was a lifelong member of the Ellingwood’s Corner Methodist Church in Winterport, and a lifetime member of The Old Maine Cemetery Association. She was a member of the Maine State Grange since 1941. She was a 43 year member and one of the founding members of T.O.P.S. Chapter 75 in Winterport where she reached her goal and received her K.O.P.S. in August of 2015. Maxine enjoyed the outdoors walking, hiking, birds, flowers, stacking wood, and mowing her lawn. Maxine walked the Appalachian Trail (in miles) making a story of the virtual adventure and she loved mountains; her favorite mountain was Mt. Katahdin.
She was predeceased by her parents and her husband Melvin Jernigan, Son Merlyn Jernigan, Grandson Yardley Lindsey, Stepson Robert Jernigan SR. and Stepdaughter Frances Jernigan Engstrom.
Maxine is survived by her children: Merita Lindsey of Winterport, Marshall Jernigan and wife Sharon of Winterport, Stepdaughter-in-law Judy Jernigan of Winterport, Stepson Ronald Jernigan and wife Carol of Darlington South Carolina. Grandchildren: Rena Marley, Shawn Jernigan, Tammy Jernigan, Bobbie Lindsey, Shelly Jernigan, Jeffery Jernigan, Theresa Jernigan, Robert Jernigan JR., Scott Jernigan, Craig Jernigan, Lewis Jernigan, Laurie Gray, Donna Vetrano, Tammy Mabe, Mike Jernigan and several great and great-great- grandchildren. Maxine had 2 very special Great Grandchildren: Egypt Lindsey-Melland and Liliana Faloon.
She was “Mammie” to her grandchildren and to many neighborhood children and friends of the family
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 30, 2016 at the Ellingwood’s Corner Church, Winterport. A private burial will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Maxine’s name. Cremation arrangements by Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor.
