Obituary of Harold W. McPherson, Jr.
Harold W. McPherson, Jr.
Bangor & Winterport – Harold Walter McPherson, Jr., 88, passed away Dec. 5, 2015 at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born Jan. 22, 1927 in Bangor, the son of Mary Helen (Eldridge) and Harold Walter McPherson, Sr. He was commonly referred to as “Mac” by his friends and as “Uncle Bud” by his family.
As a boy, Mac grew up with a large family during the Great Depression. He referred to this period as “tough times.” Just after his 17th birthday, he enlisted in the US Navy and served during World War II. Upon his retirement from the US Navy he returned to Bangor. For 23 years he worked for the Bangor School Department as a custodian, primarily at 5th Street School. In his later years, he worked for his good friend Gabby Price at Fairmount Market and The Corner Store.
Mac liked to keep busy, he was always tinkering around the house, such as painting or mowing. When he wasn’t keeping busy Mac liked to read, especially history. Even though he traveled the world during his time in the Navy, he never got his driver’s license. He took great pride in his appearance, always dressed-up when heading out. Although he valued his privacy, he had fond memories of going “out on the town” with his friends, going out to eat, telling stories and playing cards with family. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the 5th Street Bulldogs and high school basketball. Mac was always giving and never expecting anything in return.
Mac was predeceased by his parents and his siblings Alice, Evelyn, Mickey, Norman, Charlotte, and Bibbi. He will be greatly missed and thought of often by his friends, nieces and nephews.
A time to honor and celebrate Mac’s life will be held 5 – 7 PM Monday, Dec. 28, 2015 at the Bangor Elks Lodge, 108 Odlin Road, Bangor. A graveside service with full military honors will be held 12 Noon Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015 at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.
