Obituary of Richard Paul MacDonald
Bangor – Richard Paul MacDonald, 92, died peacefully Feb. 10, 2017 at a Bangor hospital with family by his side. Richard was born Nov. 29, 1924 in Brewer, the last remaining sibling of Duncan and Ellen MacDonald. Richard preferred to be called "Mac" by his friends and family. He attended John Bapst and later, part of his senior year, attended Bangor High School where he excelled in his favorite sport of football. Richard left his senior year to enroll at Maine Maritime Academy where he graduated in the third class following the schools establishment. Upon graduation he served during World War II on the James E. Howard vessel from 1944 to Sept 1945 and then was honorably discharged from the US Coast Guard/Merchant Marine. Richard married Jacqueline Cyr of Bangor in 1946. He relocated his young family to Portsmouth, NH in 1954 to work for the Schiller Power Plant for some years until he ventured on his own managing a Mobil Service Station in Portsmouth through the 1960's. In 1974, Richard upgraded his Merchant Marine license to a chief engineer and returned to sailing out of New York and Beaumont, TX where he fell in love with country music. Upon retirement in Rye, NH, he invested in a restaurant/lounge which featured country bands. Richard relocated back to Bangor in 1998.
Surviving are six children, Bernard of Orrington, Duncan and his wife, Sheryl of Venice, FL, Mary and her husband, David Fournier of Eliot, Karen Goldsmith of Dover, NH, John MacDonald of Portsmouth, NH and Ann and her husband, Wayne Castillez of Eliot; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; special niece, Laurie Jewell and her husband, John; special nephew, Tom Hennessy and his wife, Nancy; special niece, Carol MacDonald. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Country Villa of Bangor, St. Joseph Hospital for their loving care, Maine Veterans Home in Bangor and the trustees of Sailors Snug Harbor in New York City.
Family and friends may visit 11 AM to 1 PM Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. A graveside service will immediately follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Ohio St., Bangor at 1:30 PM. Messages and memories may be share with his family at kileyandfoley.com.
